We want this site to be usable by everyone who wants to read it, including people using screen readers, keyboard navigation, magnification or voice control. If something here blocks you, we want to know and we will fix it.
Semantic structure. Pages use real headings in order, real lists and real landmarks, so a screen reader can navigate by structure instead of guessing.
Readable type. Body text is set large enough to read comfortably and reflows when you zoom. Nothing depends on a fixed pixel size.
Contrast. Text is dark on light at a ratio that clears the AA threshold.
Keyboard access. Every link and control can be reached and operated by keyboard, and focus is visible when you get there.
No motion traps. Nothing auto-plays, auto-scrolls, auto-advances or moves under you while you read.
Meaningful link text. Links say where they go rather than "click here", which matters when they are read out of context.
Plain markup. The site loads no third-party scripts, so nothing injects an inaccessible widget into a page after it renders.
What we know is imperfect
Being honest is more useful than claiming a clean sheet:
Some older articles contain images whose alternative text is thinner than it should be. We are working through them.
Wide reference tables scroll sideways on a narrow screen. That is usable but not elegant, and a linearized view would be better.
Downloadable PDFs published across the network vary in how well they are tagged for screen readers. If you need the content of a PDF in another format, ask and we will send it.
We have not commissioned an independent audit. When we do, we will publish what it finds.
Tell us about a barrier
Email [email protected] with the page address and what went wrong. You do not need to know the technical term for the problem. "The text disappears when I zoom in" is a perfectly good bug report.
We aim to reply within five working days, and to tell you either that it is fixed or when it will be.
